Abstract: 13 static and 3 dynamic virtual insect models are presented on the web. They can be used for teaching morphology and for virtual labs.

Description: Virtual reality is an emerging electronic technology which enhances human interaction with model objects. We have developed 13 insect models from various orders that can be used to teach insect morphology. An animated flying wasp illustrates the biomechanics of insect flight, and running cockroach shows how to move with 6 legs. Animated models can be used to study insect behavior. We started building a model of internal anatomy of a cockroach, which includes animation of individual organs. This model will be used for virtual dissections and physiological experiments. At present time virtual insect models are displayed in the CAVE (Computer Automated Virtual Environment) at Virginia Tech and also are available from the web page '3D Insects'.
