Abstract: The dogwood borer, Synanthedon scitula (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae), is a pest to a wide range of orchard, landscape, and ornamental trees throughout the eastern U.S. and Canada. Until recently very little information has been gathered on the dogwood borer despite its large host range. My research objectives are to investigate the various aspects of mated female behavior with regard to sensory cues associated with host plants and ovipostional sites. Once the basic mechanisms behind female dogwood borer behavior is established, additional management strategies can be investigated that serve as stand alone practices or can be readily allied with other pest management approaches.
