European corn borer and lace bug resistance

PI(s): Schultz, Peter B

Investigators: Dills, Marie

Abstract: Identification of leaf pubescence as a morphological character lead to cultivar identification of lace bug resistance by azalea and cotoneaster. Studies identified stem diameter in garden chrysanthemums as a key factor in European corn borer resistance.

Description:

Research that focused on the identification of economically important cultivars that possess resistance to insect pests. A common source of resistance, leaf pubescence, was found with species of Cotoneaster and cultivars of azalea. Narrow stem diameter was found to be a resistance factor against infestation of European corn borer in fall production of chrysanthemum. The latter study contributed to the profitability of this crop, and its annual production increased from 15,000 units to over 4 million.
