Relationship of European corn borer on whole-plant corn yield

Abstract: Previous research has focused almost exclusively on the impact of European corn borer on corn grown for grain. Findings from our two-year field study have indicated that 3-4 tunnels per stalk are necessary before economic loss occurs in whole-plant yield. The significance of this is that our field surveys have shown that this level of tunneling pressure rarely occurs in field corn in Virginia. These findings promise to offer growers in Virginia as well as in other Mid-Atlantic states much needed information on the impact of European corn borer on corn grown for silage.
