Abstract: The STS Project Information System is the primary information management system for gypsy moth population data from the ten states involved in the National Gypsy Moth Slow the Spread Project. We are responsible for processing, quality control, and distribution of trap catch data in a format usable by project personnel for management decisions. In addition, we are responsible for codifying all aspects of STS Project components into an information systems framework that serves as the structure for seasonal project activities.
Description: Our group in Entomology at Virginia Tech has established itself nationally as one of the premier sites for innovation and implementation of database and GIS technology. The Virginia Gypsy Moth Information Management System was initiated in 1983 and has a long history with gypsy moth management activities such as the Maryland Integrated Pest Management Program, the Appalachian Integrated Gypsy Moth Pest Management (AIPM) Project, and the Slow the Spread (STS) Pilot Project. Currently, our group is involved in the National Gypsy Moth STS Project which is implemented to varying degrees on nearly 400,000 square kilometers in the states of North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan. The goal of the National STS Project is to implement IPM strategies proven in the STS Pilot Project in an effort to slow the rate of spread of gypsy moth from infested into non-infested areas. In addition to providing database, GIS, and Web support for STS, our group also serves as the liaison between the information systems component and field operations. We are involved in the development of field protocols, survey tools and methodologies, decision support, and quality control issues.
