Abstract: Mosquito-borne viruses such as dengue and yellow fever viruses have become a major international public health concern in recent years. Regions in West Africa, such as Mali, have been hit especially hard with emerging and re-emerging arboviruses. However, despite the increasing need for arbovirus prevalence information and surveillance in Mali, little work has been done. An extensive review of the literature procured only one scientific paper that addressed the issue of mosquito-borne virus prevalence in Mali. Although significant work has been completed in nations surrounding the southern regions of the country, Mali’s plight has continually been forgotten.

Description: Overall Project Goals:  Identify Aedes abundance, distribution, and infection status in the southern regions of Mali where mosquito-borne virus transmission is known to occur.  Determine high risk areas for dengue and yellow fever transmission by overlaying information gathered from the study with local environmental conditions.  Provide preliminary data for Mali to initiate a sustainable mosquito-borne virus surveillance network.
